Installing a GPS into the AP2 s2000

The AP1 s2000 had a clean little cup holder that could perfectly fit a Garmin GPS and I had always planned on doing that mod when I got an s2000.

The s2000 I ended up getting was the AP2 model and didn’t have the same type of cup holder so I had to find another place to install a GPS. The front window is so small and the dash so high that putting it anywhere in the window obstructs the driver’s view, and i definitely didn’t feel like cutting into the dash.

I installed the PanaVise bracket designed for the s2000 that bolts into the same holes that hold the stereo. The TomTom One GPS comes with a mounting bracket that has holes that perfectly line up with the pre-drilled holes in the PanaVise bracket, and the resulting install is beautiful. The GPS is in perfect reach to make adjustments to your route while driving, and the unit can easily be removed and taken out of the car when not in use.

s2kblog.com reader zack emailed me this question, so i thought i’d take the time to clarify:

hello! i had a quick question on the “AP2 s2000 GPS Install w/ PanaVise Bracket”. what size the TOMTOM that you installed in the car and do you know where i could buy the bracket? also is installing the bracket difficult ( do u have to remove the stereo or any parts?). any info would be greatly appreicated.

the panavise bracket is available at modifry.com for $20. The GPS that i installed is the TomTom One, 3rd Edition, but i imagine you could use this bracket to connect to just about any portable GPS unit.

Here are some pictures of the install process:

First, remove the center console if you’re working with the AP2. Just get your fingers under the edges and you can pull it straight up. If you remove the shift knob, you can remove it all the way, but i just throw it in reverse and can pull it back far enough to get the job done:

Next, pull out the dash surrounding the radio. I usually open the radio door, and gently pull on it until it comes out. It’s just held in with clips, no screws.

The bracket screws into the same holes that secure the right side of the radio. The shape of the bracket contours to the edges of the dash, so that everything can cleanly install on top of it.

Push the dash back in (be careful not to break any clips, it needs to go in straight (this is why you needed to remove the center console), and then push the center console back in and you’re finished.
